H\u00e9las, la pand\u00e9mie Covid-19 a contrari\u00e9 le programme de nos activit\u00e9s et en particulier celle-ci.<\/p>\n

.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> Dans le jardin anglais du Domaine National, le long de l'all\u00e9e Dauphine, plus de 100 personnes se sont rassembl\u00e9es autour du pacanier plant\u00e9 en mars 2020, pour le d\u00e9voilement de la plaque. Cette belle manifestation qui s'est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e aussit\u00f4t la cl\u00f4ture de la journ\u00e9e de l'Exposition Associations, a \u00e9t\u00e9 l'occasion d'\u00e9couter de belles allocutions c\u00e9l\u00e9brant l'amiti\u00e9 entre les peuples et en particulier celui des Etats-Unis, dont les volontaires, par deux fois au cours du XX\u00b0 si\u00e8cle, ont aid\u00e9 la France \u00e0 recouvrer sa libert\u00e9, scellant une amiti\u00e9 n\u00e9e d\u00e8s avant la participation de la France \u00e0 la Guerre d\u2019Ind\u00e9pendance. Les interventions d'un jeune lecteur de Notre-Dame et des \u00e9l\u00e8ves de 6\u00e8me de Saint-Augustin qui ont chant\u00e9 les deux hymnes nationaux, ont cl\u00f4tur\u00e9 avec \u00e9motion cette c\u00e9r\u00e9monie. Longue vie au pacanier et \u00e0 l'amiti\u00e9 franco-am\u00e9ricaine.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Let's start off by talking about what a sister city arrangement is. We've been seeing some of this in the paper, but maybe we should start at the basics and let everybody know what this arrangement is.<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Okay, it's a wonderful opportunity and it goes on all over the world. Cities in different countries establish relationships and the purposes can be very diverse. They can be for exchanges for minimal things like just student exchanges. They can be very, very expansive. Boston, I know, has a sister city relationship with Kyoto, Japan, for instance.<\/p>\n

In our case, we were approached by Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, which is a beautiful, beautiful town West Of Paris, about as far west as we are from Boston. And they have three other sister cities with which they have very active relationships, not in The States, French Morocco, Germany, and Scotland. And the purpose from their point of view is having educational exchanges, arts and cultural exchanges, and business exchanges. And they wanted a sister city in The States, and they hired a company to review port cities on the Eastern Seaboard that were easy to get to, and they requested a smaller town that would pay attention to them and really enjoy the relationship and where they wouldn't get lost in the shuffle. So the company ended up recommending Arlington Virginia, Marion Pennsylvania and Winchester, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

So they contacted us a little over a year ago, and the letter came to the Board of Selectmen as it happened two weeks before my husband and I were going on vacation anyway in France,so I suggested maybe it would be nice to check out the possibilities. So the Town Manager and the Selectman supported suggesting taking a three hundred and fiftieth medal and a nice photograph of town hall and a little information about Winchester. And we faxed them back, now that we have a fax, saying there would be a slectman in Paris who would get in touch with them in a couple of weeks, we did that.<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That is interesting, we have, you said Saint Germain has three other sisters, or three altogether?<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Three others\u2019 Other sister city in three different countries, but they wanted a sister city relationship with The United States, and we are it.<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And they chose us on probably your personal diplomacy<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 No, no, anything no. Don't think, no, no, no, no. That's very nice, but no. When we visited Paris, as a matter of fact, I got in touch with the company, and my French is fairly minimal, my husband's very fluent.<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 But improving as we<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Improving, of course, as we speak. And our last day in Paris, I hadn't heard from Saint Germain, and I had this medal. And my husband said, What are we gonna do with our last day? And I said, I'll tell you what we're gonna do. We're gonna go Saint Germain.<\/p>\n

He said, You haven't heard anything. You sure we ought to go? I said, Look, you do trains, I do mayors. We're going to Saint Germain. And we went and had a brief half an hour, but very delightful meeting with Mayor Pericard<\/p>\n

And it's interesting over there, the mayor of Saint Germain is also a national congressman, so he's sort of a Ray Flynn and a John Kerry, if you will. So the political system is interesting. Anyway, it delightful not only to meet them, but the town is absolutely beautiful. It's just beautiful.<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Well, think we're gonna see some pictures at some point of that shortly. But now we had not been picked at that time ?<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 At that time we had not been picked. And we I told them we were interested. We were delighted to receive their letter. I brought them information about the town. I toured their town a little bit, you know, we did that day, and said we'd like very much to hear from them in the future.<\/p>\n

And several months later, that was two Septembers ago, six months after that we got another notice that a small delegation, meaning the mayor and his wife, which was unexpected, and an interpreter and his wife were coming to The States to see Arlington, Virginia, Marion, and Winchester. And you know about that, because we got the letter, and not great deal of notice, but people like you were very responsive. We had a lunch at Maximilians with a very diverse group of business people, Bill Cummings and you, and David Sowell from Metropolitan Area Planning Council, Justin McGee, chamber people, a town manager. Know I've forgotten someone, but it was delightful.<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 It's the first one in a long time. A woman from Arlington sent me last year a photograph when she was with her husband on a Rotary International trip. They visited Winchester, England. And apparently in 1936, there was a brief connection, but it never turned into, apparently, an active relationship.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Tell me about or tell us all about some of the advantages. What can Winchester expect out of this ?<\/p>\n

Judie<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Well, their interests, as they expressed to us, were having exchanges with schools, and the schools in France are run on a county basis, and the mayor did not know that Winchester High kids have been exchanging with a cote cloche des busines in Saint Germain for several years. So we already have an exchange, and he didn't know about it because the towns don't run the schools the same way. They would like art and cultural exchanges, and they would like business exchanges.<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 As Art far and cultural, maybe expand that<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Yes, a little for instance, Ellen Knight and Steve Walliger came over to the house the other day, the Winchester concert series. They would like to invite a concert pianist, musician, a group, or whatever, to come from Saint Germain and fit into one of the concerts in the future. Lynne Raymeyer from high school is currently bringing together a group of 24 voices, adults and kids, to do the Hovanes piece. They've been invited to Saint Germain in June as part of the celebration of the centennial of the birth of Claude Debussy, who was born in Saint Germain. So that's an example.<\/p>\n

We already have the school exchange, the musical exchange will be in the spring, and of course December 4, in two weeks, I'm going with 18 other people to Saint Germain for six days. And that group, again, is a mixed group. There are business and chamber people. There are people from representing the historical society, the music groups, the art association, others representing the schools, Alice MacArthur's, Gwen Roseanne Innis, all these people have<\/p>\n

Alan<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 We're getting a little bit ahead of ourselves We're gonna talk about Just let me direct it back to some of the other exchanges that we can expect with Saint Germain.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Okay. We will find out when we go which businesses might be interested in having a connection in The States and setting up an office and a focus point Boston or in Winchester. It doesn't have to be Winchester proper. They need their sister city to be a facilitator. And this is why David Sowell from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council is going with information about Boston possibilities.<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Boston has a large French community and they know this. So the Bibliotheque Francaise is here, there's an Alliance Francaise. There's quite a large French speaking community And I didn't find out till this all began that we have a lot of French speaking families in Winchester I've to be host heard home exchanges for vacation possibilities mentioned. I've mentioned the music exchanges. Ecole Claude Debussy has set up with the high school, but schooling in France starts for youngsters at the age of two.<\/p>\n

There are pre-primary and then primary schools. The junior high is called college. The high school is called lycee. And when a French youngster graduates from the high school level, in our terms, at 18 or 19, they've had an education equal to two years of college, up to two years of college. So they're looking for school exchanges and possibilities that way.<\/p>\n

The Art Association looking for art exchanges, museum exchanges, Pen Pal possibilities with younger kids until they are So we're gonna be looking at coordinating activities with not just Winchester, but this whole greater Boston area. Absolutely. We will try to meet their needs and they are going to try to respond.<\/p>\n

Rich in history, it is the birthplace of Henry the second, Charles the ninth and composer Claude Debussy among others. The city's natural beauty, sited next to the great forest, together with its proximity to Paris has always made it a popular vacation spot. Mary Steward of England, Moliere, Mozart, Voltaire and Stendal are among those who throughout the centuries have come to enjoy Saint Germain. In fact, Saint Germain has not gone unnoticed by the great painters who have captured forever the beauty of its landscape, its architecture and its people.<\/em><\/p>\n

Saint Germain-en-Laye is a strong economic center. It is called the premier commercial center West of Paris and it is also home to thriving high technology industry. In addition, its educational system is highly regarded and well supported by the community. Finally, the depth of cultural activity in the city is noteworthy. Rich in cultural history, the city nurtures the arts with strong programs and fabulous museums available to residents and visitors alike.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>Now, Saint Germain-en-laye has asked Winchester to be its sister city and to embark on an exchange of ideas for the betterment of commerce, education, and culture for both locales.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 December, December 4 actually, the mayor's son Arnaud was here for three weeks and he worked with the recreation department and investigated Boston and was with a local family, the Charles Dahms. And he called in the midst of that visit and said Mrs. Muggia, dad called and Saint Germain has voted Winchester to be their sister city. And we had already indicated to them that we would be delighted. They are going to have a Fiesta Festival on December 8 to honor the twinning, it's called a Jumelage in France.<\/p>\n

Please come with a delegation. So I got hot on the wires right away because I felt it could be a problem. This is two and a half weeks before Christmas. It's an expensive trip. In France, taxes support sister city relationships in this way.<\/p>\n

Here, doesn't happen, so anyone who goes has to go on their own nickel, as it were. In less than twenty four hours, 17 people had signed up from these various areas. So I don't know whether that indicates everybody needs a vacation or everybody's in a cynicism<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Now I see or recall when you were talking about the details that it wasn't that expensive at the time.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 We jumped on board. We're going to be accommodated by host families, all of whom have an English speaking person. And they have mapped out a program for us that is really, really wonderful.<\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/p>\n

Since Mayor Pericard is a national congressman, they've arranged a full day in Paris at the Musee d'Orsay with lunch, a dinner on the Bateau Mouches, which is a boat that goes up and down the Seine Paris by night. And before we do that, he's arranged for us to go to the French National Assembly for an aperitif and see the French National Assembly. And then that's just the lead in to Saturday, is the twinning ceremonies, which will take place at their town hall, a sixteenth century building, with a very modern room for television and for programs.<\/p>\n

I'm working on my extremely brief speech, I trust will be absolutely. I hope not to be an ugly American and I think they'll indulge me, and I'll do my best.<\/p>\n

Everybody is taking one of the bronze three hundred and fiftieth medals to give to their host family. Whitney Gay has done a wonderful set of slides that we'll take to show them, to introduce them to Winchester. I know I've forgotten people. Just everybody, so many people have contributed to this. And we need more, because as soon as we get back, we need to form a council that really pays attention to this need.<\/p>\n

Wouldn't miss it for the world. Roseanne Ennis and Alice McCarter from the school system. Roseanne is teaching Italian, but she's fluent in French. And Alice McCarter as an elected school committee member. Tom Maher, who I met through Eagle Scouts, as an Eagle Scout parent, is lead counsel for Honeywell Bull International, and their international headquarters are near Saint Germain.<\/p>\n

He's going. David Sowell and his wife and daughter are going. David is the head of the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council. Cynthia Krumme, Sargasso Enterprises and Historical Society representation Helen Povtak, Real Estate Relocation Services. I do have a son who is going, and it happens that his law firm owns an international corporate financing arm, a bank, and has an international corporate division.<\/p>\n

So he's been directed to bring business materials from them. The head of the exchange program from Brandeis University is able to go, and they already have students in Paris, and she's bringing information from other universities, other guests I had at my house from those programs. Oh, I've forgotten, I know I've but forgotten there are 18 of us.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Well, person who's going that I didn't mention is Chris Montgomery who teaches at LaSalle Junior College and is very interested in the lower school exchange, pen pal kind of things to And she's interested in seeing perhaps some more foreign language, such as French, earlier in the grades. So she's bringing a great deal of material and is going to talk. We're all going to talk to, for lack of a better word, counterparts. People in our areas of interest, so that we can tell each other the kinds of things we're interested in. So we're all going with specific materials. We're also going with packets for their 39 elected officials that give a view of Winchester. It's a small packet that has a travel insert from the Globe from a couple of weeks ago that Karl Aukerblum, who lives in Winchester, brought me 40 copies of, bless them.<\/p>\n

Information about the schools, Rosanne Innis brought me the Sachems folders with the wonderful Sachems head on top. So they'll get those with a map of Winchester and a bit of the history, the Historical Society. Ellen Spencer provided a brief history, those kinds of things. So we're going to collate all those things the week after Thanksgiving. Package them, check them through.<\/p>\n

And we heard about the fabulous delegation that you took with you and except for Tom Schmidt everyone was able to go.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Everybody was able to go. And there was a total of 19. 19 people who went and we're here to follow-up with an update.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And you asked the right question. It was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. I I think we all expected to be interested.<\/span><\/p>\n

We expected to learn a lot. We knew that we went because the sister city relationship was accepted by Saint Germain and we were interested. So we knew that we would see things and learn things and meet people. I don't think any of us were prepared for the for the level of warmth of the welcome. It was just out of this world. We were programmed within an inch of our lives in both fashion and in Paris, but the it was the people who really really made the trip. They were wonderful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Ann<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Now you were hosted by local people from Saint-Germain ?<\/span><\/p>\n

Judie <\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That's right. Yeah. And everybody was able to stay with a host family. Almost everybody. I stayed in a hotel, and Sally and Dick Donovan stayed with me at a hotel, which is in the center of town, offered everybody a pied a terre in case they needed it. Sure. It gave you a flavor of the city. Well, that's right. Different flavor. And we weren't allowed to pay our bill at the end, either.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Ann<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Well, it sounds like they were fabulous hosts and Very kind of. Perhaps you can give us a little bit of an idea beyond the regular sightseeing type programming that was done. What programs were hosted by Saint Germain for the delegation to introduce you to the town in terms of what both of you might be interested in doing with the sister's relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 They \u00a0did several different things to all dovetailed. One complete day was spent in Saint Germain, and one of the things we did which was perfectly delightful was have a tour guide who was the most charming lady, and we did a walking tour of the old center of Saint Germain. We saw the home of Madame de Montespan, who was a favorite of the king many years ago and left her home to be an orphanage. We saw the home of Claude Debussy, old seventeenth century buildings, sixteenth century, some of them, some of the shopping, which was fabulous. The chateau, all those kinds of things.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another day was a total day in Paris, the Musee d'Orsay, lunch, the National Assembly, a stop, the Bateau Mouche in Paris by night, over dinner, a bus tour of Paris. So we saw their major city, which is like Boston is to us. We saw the old Saint Germain as as we would show them Winchester, I think. And somewhere in the midst of all this, individuals met with their counterparts. School people met with school people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Business people met with rotary and lawyers groups and and enterprise group. The arts and culture people, Susie Bratsoe, principally from the Manchester Art Association had a chance to go to several museums, two of them local, and and meet with with local people. So we touched base. The different groups touch base with their counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Ann<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And I'm sure that you're now already gearing up for what will be the social event of the spring in Winchester, which is the arrival of the Saint Germain delegation to Winchester.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That's right. They would like to come in the spring. We suggested that the May would be a marvelous time for them to come. That will occur shortly before Lynn Raymeyer from high school goes with 24 voices with an adult.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 In honor of the one hundredth birthday. Right ?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That's right. Part of the Claude Debusy thing. It turns out that all of Europe has a musical festival in June. So every practically every major city and town throughout Europe will be celebrating music in June, and they'll be tired of it for Saint Germain. So it'll be wonderful.<\/span><\/p>\n

But they're coming in May, and on the way home in the plane, we feel that so many ideas, as I told you earlier, they have to spend a month, and they can't do that. So we're just gonna have to decide on what things would suit the most.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 You've also been telling me all sorts of things that are pleasant surprises like the fact that you gave a speech in French while you were there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I had a lot of coaching.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Ann<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And this was after you lied to me before by telling me you didn't speak a word of French.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I speak very little French, very little, but I had wonderful coaching from Brigitte Tournier who lives here in Winchester and teaches at Buckingham Brown and Nichols, was very helpful. My speech was very short, but it apparently was well received.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 But it earned you quite an honor from the mayor of Saint Germain, M Michel Pericard..<\/span><\/p>\n

During the celebration, he made quite a list in terms of what we were doing, a fairly long speech, eight or ten minutes, why The United States, why Massachusetts, why Winchester. He spoke very movingly of the relationship of the two countries during the second world war And maybe we wouldn't be celebrating a sister city if it wasn't for the American servicemen. So that was a very moving thing to do. And perhaps spur of the moment, I really don't know, but at the end of that talk, he took off this Mayor Lord Mayor's sash which has gold tassels at the end. It's the tricoleurs.<\/span><\/p>\n

They call it red, white, and blue. And according to several people in the council after the ceremonies, they told me that this was given to him by Francois Mitterrand and that he had never given it before. And this we will be their fourth sister city, the only one in The United States, but the fourth So it was a very, very moving thing and certainly a tremendous honor. So Winchester is the only sister city, certainly, of Saint Germain that that will enjoy having a ceremonial finish. Absolutely beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And in this particular picture, if the close-up is is close enough, you'll see that the Mayor of Saint Germain is holding a handsome photograph by Arthur Griffin beautifully framed that he gave the delegation to take to Saint Germain as part of our presentation to their group, our Town Hall, which is one of our major historic sites. Their chateau as I told you was from the twelfth century. We don't go back that far but it's a beautiful photograph. They were delighted to receive it. And in return we sent we signed together what they referred to as protocols and they I have one here.<\/span><\/p>\n

It's already down in Town Hall and they have one in French that they signed and as a gift to the Town of Winchester they gave us this beautiful very old print that is hand\u00a0 tinted and is of the chateau and this print was\u00a0 done a while ago and it is a print of over a century ago people in the center of Saint Germain. Nowadays the castle has changed very little and when you come up from their T station or what we would call their T station, this is the view in the center of town to which one is treated. A few more houses closer by, but is it truly a beautiful print. It's a beautiful print. Yeah.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mayor and his wife have the largest collection of prints of Saint Germain, in the town, in the area. The second thing that was presented to us that is handsome is a very heavy bronze seal and on one side it has the chateau and it has the seal of Saint Germain which is a cradle and a crown and it's in the honor of the birth of the son king Louis the fourteenth and it took one of the French council members to point out to us that he was born the Sun King was born in 1638, and 1638 is the year in which Waterfield was incorporated, our ancestry town, if you will. And so this this Frenchman in particular said that this particular twin city relationship was meant to be. Absolutely meant to be. And the other side is very nicely engraved in honor of the of the Twin Cities.<\/span><\/p>\n

So that's absolutely wonderful. So the panel will be honored to have that too.<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to know as a resident of Winchester, what's in this for me? I want to know what I'm going to gain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judie<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Okay. I can tell you the average resident can gain right away because one of the major things both towns want see are personal exchanges. And this can mean exchanging homes, summer or winter. And I've had a couple already whose daughter is hoping to go to Middlebury College who would like to stay in our small place in Vermont and have offered us their vacation home in Cousin Trust in in Okay. For a couple of weeks. So any family who thinks they'd like to visit France and would like to have a place to stay, not a hotel, and be part of a town, let us know because we'd be happy to set this up for the families that would love to do this.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a little broader basis, a little more formal, anyone who's involved in music, in the arts, who would like a pen pal for their youngster, who would like a youngster to go to school over there, who would like to visit following perhaps French lessons and have a brief visit. Anyone who is in business and would like to at least investigate either handmade or locally manufactured items that they think would go over or would like to have a counterpart who speaks English who could discuss with them the possibilities of marketing their product or setting up a satellite store or be part of a part of an enterprise in Saint Germain or the area around, just let us know.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That's great. Now they're like, what do you mean when you say us?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 We the current delegation who went will probably, I think, be the nucleus of a sister city council. This will be a private group of citizens, whoever they are, who are interested in this kind of exchange. And the sorts of things we'll need to do is some fundraising to help groups like The Chorus go over there, take care of postage and those kinds of Right. Practical interchanges. We'll need people who are interested in furthering the cause of the arts and music.<\/span><\/p>\n

People in business who are interested in either being helpful in the legal sense or in a location sense or in making the connections happen. Certainly, people from the school system, and this involves area universities. Linda Mapleson came with us from Brandeis and their students already exchanged. But there are possibilities for local college students maybe you haven't thought of this. Work projects going for a limited length of time to work with senior citizens, to work with kids with special needs, to work with very small children.<\/span><\/p>\n

The possibilities are endless.<\/span><\/p>\n

They can contact me. They can contact any of the groups that went. Tom Myers, the Dunavans, Helen Pofta, Chris Montgomery, Cindy Crumey, my son is in Boston, Frank Lentz for his law firm. I'm missing half the names.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, Chris Connolly and Karen Buckley who went for the press. Right. And had a wonderful time and they reported beautifully on it. Any one of us who went would be happy to to take a name and make sure it gets to the group. And I imagine the council will be relatively small, 10 or 12 people, but we need larger groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

They need to be the focus of larger groups that are interested in specific areas. Anyone who wants to take part, they need to hear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dans notre cas, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 contact\u00e9s par Saint-Germain-en-Laye<\/strong>, en France, une magnifique ville \u00e0 l'ouest de Paris, \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s aussi loin \u00e0 l'ouest que nous de Boston. Ils ont \u00e9galement trois autres villes jumel\u00e9es avec lesquelles ils entretiennent des relations tr\u00e8s actives, hors des \u00c9tats-Unis : le Maroc fran\u00e7ais, l'Allemagne et l'\u00c9cosse. Leur objectif est de favoriser les \u00e9changes \u00e9ducatifs, artistiques et culturels, ainsi que les \u00e9changes commerciaux. Ils souhaitaient un jumelage aux \u00c9tats-Unis et ont fait appel \u00e0 une agence pour \u00e9valuer les villes portuaires de la c\u00f4te Est<\/strong>, faciles d'acc\u00e8s. Ils souhaitaient une ville plus petite, \u00e0 l'\u00e9coute, qui appr\u00e9cierait vraiment cette relation et o\u00f9 ils ne seraient pas perdus dans la foule. L'agence a donc finalement recommand\u00e9 Arlington (Virginie), Marion (Pennsylvanie) et Winchester (Massachusetts).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ils nous ont contact\u00e9s il y a un peu plus d'un an<\/strong>, et la lettre est arriv\u00e9e au conseil municipal, deux semaines avant que mon mari et moi partions en vacances en France. J'ai donc sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 d'\u00e9tudier les possibilit\u00e9s. Le directeur municipal et le conseiller municipal ont donc soutenu la proposition d'apporter une m\u00e9daille du 350e anniversaire, une belle photo de l'h\u00f4tel de ville et quelques informations sur Winchester. Nous leur avons r\u00e9pondu par fax, maintenant que nous avons re\u00e7u le fax, en leur disant qu'un conseiller municipal \u00e0 Paris les contacterait dans quelques semaines, ce que nous avons fait.<\/p>\n

Mon mari m'a demand\u00e9 : \u00ab Qu'est-ce qu'on va faire de notre dernier jour ?<\/em> \u00bb J'ai r\u00e9pondu : \u00ab Je vais te dire ce qu'on va faire. On va aller \u00e0 Saint-Germain.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n

Il m'a r\u00e9pondu : \u00ab Tu n'as rien entendu. Tu es s\u00fbre qu'on devrait y aller ?<\/em> \u00bb J'ai r\u00e9pondu : \u00ab \u00c9coute, tu t'occupes des trains, moi des maires. On va \u00e0 Saint-Germain.<\/em> \u00bb Nous y sommes all\u00e9s et avons eu une br\u00e8ve r\u00e9union d'une demi-heure, mais tr\u00e8s agr\u00e9able, avec le maire P\u00e9ricard.<\/p>\n

Et c'est int\u00e9ressant, l\u00e0-bas, le maire de Saint-Germain est aussi un d\u00e9put\u00e9 national, donc c'est un peu comme Ray Flynn et John Kerry, en quelque sorte. Le syst\u00e8me politique est int\u00e9ressant. Bref, c'est un vrai plaisir de les rencontrer, et la ville est absolument magnifique. Elle est tout simplement magnifique.<\/p>\n

J'ai fait un petit tour, vous savez, on l'a fait ce jour-l\u00e0, et on leur a dit qu'on aimerait beaucoup avoir de leurs nouvelles \u00e0 l'avenir.<\/p>\n

Et quelques mois plus tard, c'\u00e9tait il y a deux mois de septembre, six mois plus tard, on nous a annonc\u00e9 qu'une petite d\u00e9l\u00e9gation, le maire et son \u00e9pouse (ce qui \u00e9tait inattendu), ainsi qu'un interpr\u00e8te et son \u00e9pouse, allaient venir aux \u00c9tats-Unis pour visiter Arlington, la Virginie, Marion et Winchester. Et vous le savez, car on a re\u00e7u la lettre, sans beaucoup de pr\u00e9avis, mais des gens comme vous ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ceptifs. Nous avons d\u00e9jeun\u00e9 chez Maximilians avec un groupe tr\u00e8s diversifi\u00e9 d'hommes d'affaires, Bill Cummings et vous, ainsi que David Sowell du Conseil de planification de la zone m\u00e9tropolitaine, Justin McGee, des repr\u00e9sentants de la Chambre de commerce et un administrateur municipal. Je sais que j'ai oubli\u00e9 quelqu'un, mais c'\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s agr\u00e9able.<\/p>\n

Une habitante d'Arlington m'a envoy\u00e9 l'ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re une photo d'elle et de son mari lors d'un voyage du Rotary International. Ils ont visit\u00e9 Winchester, en Angleterre. Apparemment, en 1936, ils ont eu une br\u00e8ve relation, mais elle ne s'est jamais transform\u00e9e en une relation active.<\/p>\n

Ils aimeraient inviter un pianiste concertiste, un musicien, un groupe, ou autre, de Saint-Germain pour participer \u00e0 l'un des concerts \u00e0 venir. Lynne Raymeyer, du lyc\u00e9e, r\u00e9unit actuellement un groupe de 24 voix, adultes et enfants, pour interpr\u00e9ter la pi\u00e8ce Hovanes. Ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9s \u00e0 Saint-Germain en juin dans le cadre des c\u00e9l\u00e9brations du centenaire <\/strong>(1962\u00a0?)<\/em> de la naissance de Claude Debussy<\/strong>, n\u00e9 \u00e0 Saint-Germain. Voil\u00e0 un exemple.<\/p>\n

Nous avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 l'\u00e9change scolaire, l'\u00e9change musical aura lieu au printemps, et bien s\u00fbr, le 4 d\u00e9cembre <\/strong>(1989),<\/em> dans deux semaines, je pars avec 18 autres personnes \u00e0 Saint-Germain pour six jours. <\/strong>Et ce groupe, encore une fois, est mixte : il y a des gens d'affaires et des musiciens de chambre. Il y a des repr\u00e9sentants de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 historique, des groupes de musique, de l'association artistique, d'autres repr\u00e9sentants des \u00e9coles, Alice MacArthur's, Gwen Roseanne Innis, tous ces gens\u2026<\/p>\n

Il n'est pas n\u00e9cessaire que ce soit \u00e0 Winchester m\u00eame. Elles ont besoin que leur ville jumelle joue un r\u00f4le de facilitateur. C'est pourquoi David Sowell, du Metropolitan Area Planning Council, s'y rend avec des informations sur les possibilit\u00e9s offertes par Boston.<\/p>\n

Boston compte une importante communaut\u00e9 francophone et elle le sait. La Biblioth\u00e8que fran\u00e7aise est pr\u00e9sente ici, ainsi que l'Alliance fran\u00e7aise. Il y a une communaut\u00e9 francophone assez importante. Et je n'ai d\u00e9couvert qu'au d\u00e9but que nous avions beaucoup de familles francophones \u00e0 Winchester<\/strong>. Je dois accueillir des familles, j'ai entendu parler d'\u00e9changes de maisons pour des vacances. J'ai mentionn\u00e9 les \u00e9changes musicaux. L'\u00c9cole Claude Debussy a \u00e9tabli un partenariat avec le lyc\u00e9e, mais en France, la scolarit\u00e9 commence d\u00e8s l'\u00e2ge de deux ans pour les enfants.<\/p>\n

Il y a l'\u00e9cole maternelle, puis l'\u00e9cole primaire. Le junior high<\/em> s'appelle coll\u00e8ge. Le high school<\/em> s'appelle lyc\u00e9e. Nous avons pass\u00e9 une journ\u00e9e enti\u00e8re \u00e0 Saint-Germain, et l'une des choses que nous avons faites, et qui \u00e9tait absolument charmante, a \u00e9t\u00e9 de faire une visite \u00e0 pied du vieux centre-ville avec une guide charmante. Nous avons visit\u00e9 la maison de Madame de Montespan, favorite du roi il y a de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, qui l'avait quitt\u00e9e pour devenir un orphelinat. Nous avons \u00e9galement visit\u00e9 la maison de Claude Debussy, de vieux b\u00e2timents du XVIIe si\u00e8cle, certains du XVIe si\u00e8cle, et une partie des boutiques, qui \u00e9taient fabuleuses. Le ch\u00e2teau, et tout ce genre de choses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Une autre journ\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 une journ\u00e9e compl\u00e8te \u00e0 Paris : le mus\u00e9e d'Orsay, un d\u00e9jeuner, l'Assembl\u00e9e nationale, une halte, le Bateau-Mouche dans Paris by night, un d\u00eener, et un tour de Paris en bus. Nous avons donc visit\u00e9 leur grande ville, qui est comme Boston pour nous. Nous avons vu le vieux Saint-Germain comme si nous leur montrions Winchester, je crois. Et au milieu de tout cela, des personnes ont rencontr\u00e9 leurs homologues. Des \u00e9l\u00e8ves ont rencontr\u00e9 des \u00e9l\u00e8ves. Des hommes d'affaires ont rencontr\u00e9 des repr\u00e9sentants du Rotary, des avocats et des entreprises. Les repr\u00e9sentants des arts et de la culture, Susie Bratsoe, principalement de la Manchester Art Association, ont eu l'occasion de visiter plusieurs mus\u00e9es, dont deux locaux, et de rencontrer des habitants. Il a \u00e9voqu\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s \u00e9mouvante les relations entre les deux pays pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Et peut-\u00eatre ne c\u00e9l\u00e9brerions-nous pas une ville jumel\u00e9e sans les soldats am\u00e9ricains. C'\u00e9tait donc un geste tr\u00e8s \u00e9mouvant. Et peut-\u00eatre sur un coup de t\u00eate, je ne sais pas vraiment, mais \u00e0 la fin de son discours, il a retir\u00e9 cette \u00e9charpe de maire, avec des glands dor\u00e9s au bout. Ce sont les tricolores.<\/span><\/p>\n

On les appelle rouge, blanc et bleu. Et selon plusieurs personnes pr\u00e9sentes au conseil apr\u00e8s les c\u00e9r\u00e9monies, ils m'ont dit que cela lui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 offert par Fran\u00e7ois Mitterrand et qu'il ne l'avait jamais fait auparavant. Et ce sera leur quatri\u00e8me ville jumel\u00e9e, la seule aux \u00c9tats-Unis, mais la quatri\u00e8me. C'\u00e9tait donc un moment tr\u00e8s \u00e9mouvant et certainement un immense honneur. Winchester est certainement la seule ville jumel\u00e9e avec Saint-Germain qui aura droit \u00e0 une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d'adieu. Absolument magnifique.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leur ch\u00e2teau, comme je vous l'ai dit, date du XIIe si\u00e8cle. On ne remonte pas aussi loin, mais c'est une belle photo. Ils \u00e9taient ravis de le recevoir. En retour, nous avons sign\u00e9 ensemble ce qu'ils ont appel\u00e9 des protocoles<\/strong>, et j'en ai un ici.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il est d\u00e9j\u00e0 affich\u00e9 \u00e0 la mairie, et ils en ont un en fran\u00e7ais qu'ils ont sign\u00e9. En cadeau \u00e0 la ville de Winchester, ils nous ont offert cette magnifique gravure ancienne, teint\u00e9e \u00e0 la main, repr\u00e9sentant le ch\u00e2teau. Cette gravure a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e il y a quelque temps et repr\u00e9sente des habitants du centre de Saint-Germain il y a plus d'un si\u00e8cle. Aujourd'hui, le ch\u00e2teau a tr\u00e8s peu chang\u00e9 et, en remontant de la station de m\u00e9tro, ou ce que nous appellerions la station de m\u00e9tro, voici la vue sur le centre-ville qui s'offre \u00e0 vous. Quelques maisons plus loin, mais est-ce vraiment une belle gravure ? C'est une belle gravure. Oui.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le maire et son \u00e9pouse poss\u00e8dent la plus grande collection de gravures de Saint-Germain de la ville et de la r\u00e9gion. La deuxi\u00e8me chose magnifique qui nous a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e est un sceau en bronze tr\u00e8s lourd. D'un c\u00f4t\u00e9, il repr\u00e9sente le ch\u00e2teau et le sceau de Saint-Germain, un berceau et une couronne. Il comm\u00e9more la naissance du fils du roi Louis XIV. Il a fallu qu'un membre du conseil fran\u00e7ais nous fasse remarquer que le Roi-Soleil est n\u00e9 en 1638, ann\u00e9e de l'incorporation de Waterfield, notre ville d'origine<\/strong>, si vous voulez. Ce Fran\u00e7ais en particulier a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que ce jumelage \u00e9tait destin\u00e9 \u00e0 se r\u00e9aliser. Absolument. L'autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 est magnifiquement grav\u00e9 en l'honneur des villes jumelles.<\/span><\/p>\n

C'est absolument merveilleux. Le panel sera donc honor\u00e9 de l'avoir \u00e9galement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ils nous ont propos\u00e9 leur maison de vacances \u00e0 Cousin Trust, \u00e0 Oklahoma City, pour quelques semaines. Alors, si une famille souhaite visiter la France et souhaite s\u00e9journer dans un endroit o\u00f9 s\u00e9journer, plut\u00f4t qu'un h\u00f4tel, et faire partie int\u00e9grante de la ville, n'h\u00e9sitez pas \u00e0 nous contacter, car nous serions ravis d'organiser ce type d'\u00e9v\u00e9nement pour les familles qui le souhaitent.<\/span><\/p>\n
